Barbetta – New York – USA

Barbetta ristorante is the oldest restaurant in New York that is still owned by the family that founded it.

Barbetta is also the oldest Italian restaurant in New York and the oldest restaurant in New York’s Theatre District.

The restaurant opened in 1906 by Sebastiano Maioglio, the daughter Laura Maioglio still the gracious host of this fabulous restaurant located in a beautiful townhouse in the heart of Manhattan.

Its landmark status has been recognized by the prestigious and highly selective “Locali Storici d’Italia”, which has designated Barbetta a Locale Storico (Historic Establishment,) the only restaurant in America to have been so named. Barbetta features traditional Piemontese dishes such as Agnolotti, Risotto, Polenta, and Bollito, but in 1962 when Laura Maioglio took over the business she was determined to make Barbetta even more Piemontese so she adds more typical dishes: Fonduta, Carne Cruda, Bagna Cauda, Bue al Barolo, and introducing white truffles and Piemonte’s traditional white truffle dishes.

The main dining room, which can be used as a ballroom and the outdoor garden is suitable for large receptions such as weddings. For smaller parties, Barbetta suggests the magnificently appointed second floor of its townhouses. This parlor floor, which has its own private entrance from the street, is imposing and patrician and consists of the original dining room, the library, and drawing rooms, each preserving its original fireplace as well as beautiful woodwork and period details.
