The end of the nineteenth century saw deep transformations of the urban physiognomy of the city.

The government implemented a recovery plan for the most degraded neighborhoods in Naples and the newly created seafront promenade. In this stimulating atmosphere of renewal, a Belgian financier, Oscar du Mesnil, in Naples with his wife, was fascinated by the city and decided to build a new hotel on the new promenade at the height of the beauty of the place.

Thus was born in 1882 the “Grand Hôtel du Vesuve”. It is a hotel of luxury and refinement that immediately became the destination of international tourists who at that time came to Naples.

Two years after the inauguration, the hotel hosts Queen Victoria of Sweden and her personal physician, Axel Munthe, a well-established writer. In 1885 he was a guest of ‘ hotel Guy de Maupassant.

The great French writer described his impact with the city in strong colors: “The people are gesticulating, the way of driving is always rather agitated: this population that makes this town so gay and unique!

Women and girls with pink and green dresses chest wrapped in red shades, blue or other bright colors, they throw along the pier a call to the passers-by, offering them all kinds of seafood of all sorts, drinks and fruits, shaking, raising their arms and faces up and decanting the quality of their merchandise in a simple and colloquial way.

” The tradition of the great Vesuvius guests continues with prominent names such as Oscar Wilde, Gabriele D’Annunzio, Enrico Caruso who defined Vesuvius as his “Neapolitan home”.

The years of World War II marked a joke of arrest until destruction during the bombing.

The hotel was completely rebuilt by employing the workers for over two years; the building assumed the present physiognomy by gaining two new plans.

The inauguration took place on April 26, 1950, and since then Vesuvius has resumed its prestige. The first illustrious signature of this new era is President Einaudi and his wife, then Ranieri of Monaco and Grace Kelly, Sweden’s Re Gustavo, Rita Hayworth, Errol Flynn, Gina Lollobrigida, Nobel Prize Rita Levi Montalcini and many others have consecrated the reputation of Grand Hotel Vesuvio internationally.

For the occasion and to meet the needs of the Presidents, it was necessary to fund the outstanding and proven professional experience of all hotel staff. And from the magical moment of the G7, which has contributed so much to the tourist revival of the city, there is no day that Grand Hotel Vesuvio has no privilege to host the protagonists of our time.
